Hypnosis, or trance, is a naturally occurring event; have you ever driven somewhere and can’t remember how you got there – that’s a trance; you are in a trance when you daydream – or get lost in thought.
The British Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis states:
"In therapy, hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with their attention narrowed down and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the therapist."
These suggestions help people make positive changes within themselves. In a hypnotherapy session you are always in control and cannot be made to do anything against your will; hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, it is the opposite – it’s about empowering you to change what needs to be changed.
Hypnotherapy aims to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind, enabling irrational fears, addictions, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome.
Almost certainly, hypnotism is a deep state of relaxation – you will not ‘be’ hypnotised, you will hypnotise yourself – with your therapist guiding you through the process. Most people are not aware that they are in a hypnotic trance, they just feel a deep sense of well being and relaxation; you will ALWAYS be in control and can awaken at any point – you cannot get stuck in a trance state.
Habits, phobias, limiting beliefs and learned behaviours are all stored at the unconscious level; NLP, Time Line Therapy and Hypnotherapy allow the therapist to speak directly with your unconscious mind and safely direct it to change course so that you safely steer clear of your own personal ‘icebergs’.
